November

November has been a busy but rewarding month! Between my birthday and Thanksgiving break, I had plenty of time to relax and spend time with friends and family; now I feel renewed and ready to complete the last 2.5 weeks of the fall semester! We already completed the GI/Neoplasia and Endocrine/Reproductive blocks this month, but I'm most excited for our Brain and Behavior course material!

For my volunteering in November, I first did a tree planting event with SOUL NOLA, during which we planted trees in peoples' yards in Mid City! I really enjoyed the event and even learned a lot about the impact of planting trees in New Orleans. Apparently, New Orleans is one of then most deforested cities in the country, and by planting more trees in the city, we are helping to not only improve the air quality and appearance of the city, but the trees' roots can help reduce standing water in the case of flooding. In addition to tree planting, I started volunteering with Edible Schoolyard this month! Edible Schoolyard is an organization that teaches gardening and cooking classes in charter schools in New Orleans, and I recently started working in the garden at Langston Hughes Academy. My responsibilities include tending the garden and taking care of the animals (pygmy goats, chickens, and a potbellied pig!!) that they have at the school, as well as assisting with the gardening classes. As someone who grew up with animals and gardening, this feels like the perfect fit for a regular volunteering experience, and provides an excellent escape from the city!

November Volunteer Hours: 6.5
