August Reflections

Hello and welcome to my first blog post!

I've now been in New Orleans for two months, and I cannot believe how quickly the time has passed! As a native to New England, it's been an adventure to experience life in a brand new city and explore all that New Orleans has to offer in term of music, culture, and of course, food.

Since we started the Masters in Pharmacology Program in July, we've come a long way in terms of material covered and our knowledge of pharmacology! While July consisted of catching us up on the basics in order to understand applications of pharmacology in the human body, August marked the beginning of the CV and ANS block. This meant combining classes with the second year medical students at Tulane, and learning more in-depth about the specific actions of drugs on the cardiovascular system and autonomic nervous system. While this likely marks one of the most dense and challenging blocks of the year, I found the material to be incredibly interesting and applicable! I especially enjoyed participating in the CV Simulation lab, in which we interacted with a "dummy" as though we were treating a patient in a hospital setting. I think that being able to see the concepts we've been learning about in a more clinical and tangible setting really helped me visualize the treatment options when reasoning through clinical problems.

Additionally, I haven't yet had an opportunity to start volunteering here in New Orleans, but I'm hoping to start very soon! I've been in touch with a coordinator at the NO/AIDS Task Force, which is a division of CrescentCare, and I'm hoping to get involved with HIV testing and counseling! I really wanted to find a consistent volunteer opportunity with an organization that makes a difference in the health of the community, so I'm hoping that the NO/AIDS Task Force is a good fit for me!

Until next time!
Kristen
