September
It's finally fall! Well, sort of. The weather still hasn't cooled down, but things are continuing as usual for us in the Pharm program. This month, we completed the Renal block, and just started on Pulmonary and Inflammation earlier this week. I mostly enjoyed learning about the renal system and found most of the concepts relatively straightforward, but pulmonary/inflammation seems slightly more challenging, albeit interesting!
September also marked the beginning of my volunteering here in New Orleans! On Saturday September 16th, I volunteered for the 1st Annual Walk for Recovery held by the Bridge House / Grace House. The Bridge House/Grace House Substance Abuse Treatment Program provides gender-specific, residential treatment for men and women struggling with substance abuse addiction in New Orleans, focusing on promoting sobriety as well as adjustment and functioning in all other areas of life. As a volunteer for the March for Recovery, I helped set up in Palmer Park and offered my assistance where needed throughout the event. Many of the volunteers and attendees demonstrated a personal connection to the Bridge House / Grace House, and it was reassuring to hear stories of recovery as a result of the program. The culmination of the event was hearing some of the speakers talk about their personal experiences with drug abuse and the impact of the program on their lives, which was as emotional as it was inspiring. I hope to continue volunteering with the Bridge House /Grace House in the future in an effort to contribute to their work in the community.
However, I would still like to find a more regular volunteering commitment in addition to the Bridge House / Grace House events. I was previously in touch with the volunteer coordinator at the NO/AIDS Task Force for a weekly volunteering opportunity, but our correspondence has ceased in recent weeks. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to regain contact and start volunteering with them for October!
